Another month, another capitol

Reflections from our Executive Director

I recently had the honor of attending the Disability Policy Seminar (DPS) in Washington, D.C., as the Executive Director of Magnify of Central Florida and chair of the Florida Developmental Disabilities Council.

During my time in the nation's capital, I had the opportunity to engage with key legislative leaders while representing the voices and concerns of those with disabilities in Florida. In the current climate with debt ceiling talks, important programs like Medicaid home and community-based services are at risk, and these are vital for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) to live and thrive in their communities

The DPS provided a unique platform for advocates, professionals, and policymakers to join forces and collaborate on critical issues affecting the disability community. With an impressive lineup of workshops, panel discussions, and the legislative fly-in at the Russell Senate Office Building, I felt honored to be part of the conversations driving disability rights and inclusion forward.

I am incredibly grateful for the connections made, the knowledge gained, and the inspiration ignited during my time at the DPS. I am amazed at the self-advocates and families who so passionately communicate their importance to legislators and how decisions made in DC affect their lives back home.

Let's continue to work together to make a significant impact on the lives of those with disabilities!
