The Magnify Difference
The Growing Adult Disability Population
Currently, there is a significant portion of the population consisting of adults with disabilities. According to recent estimates from the Residential Information Systems Project (RISP), there are approximately 7.5 million people with an intellectual or developmental disability (IDD) in the United States (2023). These individuals not only require care and support but also face additional challenges such as limited access to employment opportunities and affordable housing.
The Housing and Caregiving Crisis
Over 650,000 people with IDD are currently on waiting lists for housing and supportive services nationwide, illustrating how even basic necessities such as shelter and healthcare can be out of reach. Additionally, according to The Arc and AARP, there are nearly 1 million households in which an adult with IDD lives with a caregiver who is age 60 or older. These aging caregivers often have no backup plan, leaving their loved ones vulnerable when they can no longer provide care. This situation highlights the urgent need for expanded support and resources to improve the quality of life for this vulnerable population.
Employment Barriers and Lost Potential
It is also troubling that over 85% of autistic adults are unemployed or underemployed, despite their abilities and talents (source: National Autism Indicators Report, 2023). This represents a significant loss of human potential and reflects systemic barriers, including lack of accessibility, persistent stigma, and inadequate workplace accommodations.
As a society, we must recognize the challenges faced by adults with disabilities and work to create a more inclusive, accessible, and supportive environment. By doing so, we ensure that everyone has the opportunity to reach their full potential and lead fulfilling lives.
Taking Action Together
